A Local Expert’s Guide to the Best of Rockland, Maine

By Rachel Penney, Operations Manager of Rockland Harbor Hotel

Welcome to Rockland, Maine, a charming coastal town that’s full of hidden gems, friendly faces, and quintessential New England charm. Whether you’re here for a quick weekend getaway or an extended stay, there’s so much to see, do, and taste right outside our doors at Rockland Harbor Hotel.

Here’s my local guide to some of my favorite places to shop, eat, and explore while you’re visiting our little corner of Mid-Coast Maine.

Favorite Shops in Rockland

If you love to browse unique boutiques and locally inspired treasures, Rockland’s Main Street is perfect for you.

Puffin’s Nest – Just a couple of blocks from Rockland Harbor Hotel, Puffin’s Nest is the go-to spot for midcoast Maine trinkets, Rockland souvenirs, and cozy apparel. You’ll find everything from T-shirts and sweatshirts to hats and nautical décor — perfect mementos of your stay.

The Grasshopper Shop – A Rockland favorite, this colorful shop is filled with fun finds: clothing, body care, books, cards, toys, and more. It’s the kind of place where you can lose track of time and always leave with something you love.

For home goods and gifts, Winifred & Evalyn feels like a higher-end version of a home boutique — always changing and full of surprises.

The Island Institute Gift Shop, local consignment and antique stores, and Fiore Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars (right across the street from us!) are also must-visits. Fiore even offers tastings — and trust me, you’ll never leave empty-handed.

Where to Eat in Rockland

Main Street Market – Known for its fresh wraps, hearty salads, and decadent chocolate cake (rich, moist, and unforgettable!).

Clan MacLaren Café – A trendy spot with healthy, creative options. My go-to is The Pixie — a pesto, tomato, and mozzarella panini — and the York Salad, featuring pecans, feta, cranberries, apples, and greens. Yum!

Rock City Coffee Café – A local institution for coffee lovers, right across from Atlantic Baking Company (ABC), where you’ll find delicious pastries and desserts to pair with your latte.

And if you’re in search of the best breakfast in Rockland, locals and visitors agree: Home Kitchen Café is the spot. It opens at 8 a.m. and fills up fast, so get there early! Their breakfast and lunch options are top-notch, with generous portions and a cozy, homey atmosphere.

Things to Do & Places to Visit

Harbor Walk – Step out of the hotel, turn right, and you can stroll either along Main Street or the waterfront boardwalk. Follow the path to Sandy Beach Park, just about a half-mile away. If you keep walking a bit further, you’ll find Newty’s Espresso Bar and Ice Cream Shop, a new local favorite serving creamy espresso drinks, fun flavors, and dairy-free frozen treats.

Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse – A must-see! This iconic in-harbor lighthouse offers beautiful views of the busy waterfront and a fun, scenic walk along the granite jetty.

Owls Head State Park & Lighthouse – Just a short drive away, Owls Head offers sweeping coastal views and a bit of a workout — there are plenty of steps to climb! While you’re there, stop by the Owls Head General Store for their famous 7 Napkin Burger, delicious pizzas, and a massive slice of chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting that rivals any dessert in town.

Marshall Point Lighthouse – Located in Port Clyde (about a 30-minute drive), this scenic spot is well worth the trip. Take the scenic route and stop at McLoons Lobster Shack in Spruce Head for one of Maine’s best lobster rolls. Don’t miss their Strawberry Rhubarb Pie or classic Maine whoopie pies!

Camden – Just a short drive north, Camden is a picture-perfect coastal town with charming shops, restaurants, and side streets full of hidden treasures. Be sure to visit Camden Hills State Park for a beautiful hike and breathtaking ocean views.

Island Adventures – If you have an extra day or two, consider taking a ferry to one of the nearby islands. The Vinalhaven and North Haven ferries depart just across the street from Rockland Harbor Hotel — ideal for a day trip. For Monhegan Island, you’ll drive to Port Clyde for the ferry. Each island has its own unique charm, art galleries, and walking trails.

Schooner Sails – You can’t leave Midcoast Maine without taking a sail on one of the schooners departing from Rockland, Rockport, or Camden. Whether it’s a sunset sail or an overnight adventure, it’s always an unforgettable experience.
